Magnum Special - 2004 Pinot Noir, Careaga
We bottled a mere five barrels of this exceptionally smooth wine in 2004 for our Vintage Wine Club members only. Following fermentation in small, open topped fermenters the wine was transferred to French oak barrels together with all its lees where it was aged for 11 months. This infuses the bright, black cherry flavors and aromas with a sense of terroir and a very silky, creamy texture that is exceptional. Enjoy this exquisite Pinot Noir with salmon, lamb or duck entrees over the next 2-4 years. DRG 12/05

Magnum Special - 2003 Petit Verdot
Petit Verdot has an almost haunting perfume of delicate violets with which it can infuse this elusive element into Bordeaux blends. It is a big, black, inky red wine that will grace any table or characteristic in full measure. Dan recommends pairing it with a hearty steak, grilled over a barbeque or with wild game like venison, elk or American Bison.

Magnum Special - 2001 Syrah, Santa Barbara County
A nearly ideal vintage, 2001 had low rainfall and a long, warm, dry growing season capped off by gorgeous, Indian summer days extending into November. The grapes for this wine are comprised of three distinct clones; one Austrailian, one an older and the other a newer French clone. We also included five percent each of Grenache Noir and Viognier for an added element of red fruit to match the black stonefruit of the Syrah together with a hint of exotic, Viognier perfume. Magnum Special - 2001 Merlot, Santa Ynez Valley
Our 2001 Merlot enjoyed a long, warm and dry growing season that permitted us to harvest the grapes at ideal ripeness and in excellent condition. A long fermentation gently extracted marvelous color and richness. This is a supple, luxurious Merlot with deep black cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors. It was aged for two full years in French and American oak barrels for uncommon smoothness and complexity. DRG 8/2003

Magnum Special - 2001 Cabernet Franc
2001 began another of a series of low rainfall years on the Central Coast. This hillside vines near Los Olivos and Happy Canyon set a modest to normal crop which ripened in dry and sunny Indian summer conditions late in October. After fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and small, open topped, fermenters the wine was barreled into 4-6 year old French and American oak for an unusually long 26 months. Ten percent Cabernet Sauvignon was added just prior to bottling for balance and complexity. Blackberry and blueberry aromas together with a hint of dustiness create an invitation to the firmly structured flavors of black cherry and wild anise in this age-worthy wine.

Magnum Special - 2000 Methuselah, S.Y. Valley
The 2000 growing season was long, warm and favorable for a large crop. Consequently, a considerable percentage of the fruit was removed to ensure complete and uniform ripeness. A wet October delayed ripening but warm, sunny days returned late in the month and into November, allowing us to harvest these grapes at near ideal ripeness. A softer vintage than was the case in '99 led us to blend a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc and less Merlot while keeping the Cabernet Sauvignon component nearly steady. Aged for over two full years in 1-2 year old French and American oak this is a sturdy yet elegant wine with blackberry, black cherry, cassis, earth, toast and spice complexity.

2006 Vixen Vivant, Rose
While a precocious pink wine that goes by the name of Vixen may bring to mind a provocative rendezvous on a warm summer day, this dry Syrah rose is as resourcefully complex and thought provoking as the most thoroughly planned affaire romantique. Think "aromatherapy" while breathing in bouquets of lavender, savory herbs and red rose petals. Flavors of sumptuous wild strawberry fruit lounge sensually on a bed of mineral and earthy undertones, this is a serious and seductive wine with endless food pairing potential. It will stand up to more than your average rose, and look good doing it! Only 159 cases produced.

2006 Riesling, Central Coast
This is a cool climate Riesling, befitting its northerly, German heritage. The grapes were grown in stony, well-drained alluvial soils which give a very clean and pleasing mineral note from start to finish. A floral aroma with honey, lemon, white peach and pineapple accents rises from the glass, followed by the same fruit-driven flavors with exquistely balanced sweetness and acidity. DRG 12/06

Named after the small French village of Vacqueyras in the southern Rhone valley, where the Grenache based red wines reigh supreme and are known for their amazing complexity and finesse. This wine is full of paradoxes approachable yet age worthy, bold yet refined, intellectual yet charming; much like its namesake. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Counoise, and Mourvedre, the fresh and vibrant raspberry and bing cherry fruit are seamlessly integrated with a pinch of white pepper and nutmeg to spice up the lengthy finish. 2005 Villain (by Vixen) Red Wine
A new label conceived by Jennifer Gehrs, as an accompaniment to her more established Vixen label. This medium bodied red is the highly fashionable Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon blend that is enjoying popularity in the market this year. And for good reason: The Syrah contributes a wonderful raspberry and red cherry component with a good deal of spice, while the Cabernet Sauvignon contributes just a hint of earthy tannins and structure to the finish. Enjoy this wine with pasta and meat sauce or any manner of pork tenderloin dishes.

2005 Unoaked Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County
Sometimes not at all is better than too much of a good thing. This is an unfettered "au naturel" style of Chardonnay presented with the full complement of original, primary tropical fruit for which Santa Barbara County is justly famous. Oak is simply unnecessary. The hand picked grapes were gently crushed and pressed, the juice settled, racked and cold fermented at a slow rate to preserve the natural essences of the grape. This complex, fruit-driven wine comes equipped with lemon blossom, quince, yellow apple, pineapple and guava aromas and flavors as standard features. A bit of aging will add dimensions of roasted hazelnuts and lightly toasted bread together with balanced acidity. DRG 2/2006

2005 Tempranillo "Incensio", Paso Robles
Tempranillo is not yet widely planted in California, even thought the Golden State's climate closely resembles that of Tempanillo's homeland; the Iberian Peninsula. Only two tons of these grapes were harvested for us in October from the first crop of a grafted vineyard. This is a very fragrant wine with plum, spice and damp earth notes. The wine is soft on the palate with blackberry and black raspberry flavors. Enjoy it over the next two-three years. DRG - 6/06

2005 Gewurztraminer, Central Coast
Just after Christmas in 2004 the skies opened up and copious rains proceeded to break the four year drought. These vines responded with renewed vigor and produced a lovely wine in 2005. We picked the grapes early to preserve the vital, natural acidity and low pH producing this crisp, nearly dry wine. The spicy Gewurztraminer aroumas come through vividly and the bright, fresh fruit flavors both tease and delight the palate in this European-style wine. DRG 12/05
